St. Petersburg, April 5 – PRIME. The district court in St. Petersburg allowed the arrest of the cryptographic currency Ethereum (ETH), stolen, according to investigators, from the owner, they said in the joint press center of the city courts.
Apparently, this is a precedent decision: before that, the courts in Russia did not impose interim measures on cryptographic currency. At least it hasn’t been publicly reported.
“The court allowed the investigator to seize Ethereum contained in 24 wallets of the accused of stealing digital currency,” the press center said.
According to the materials of the case, the victim bought 7,000 ETH in 2017 – at the current exchange rate, this is about 2 billion rubles, and at that time it was about 56 thousand dollars, or 3.3 million rubles.
The alleged offender hacked into the wallet of a crypto billionaire and transferred ETH for himself. The victim complained to the police, as a result, criminal proceedings were opened under two articles, on illegal access to computer information and theft on an especially large scale.
Ultimately, the investigation found out that the crypto wallets of the implied scammer contained 4,000 ETH (more than a billion rubles), which the investigation asked to arrest. The rest of the cryptographic currency, perhaps, the figurant has already managed to spend.
“The court allowed the investigator to seize the Ethereum contained in 24 wallets of the accused,” the court decided.
In accordance with the explanation of the instance, the main difference between crypto money and funds is “only the method of their appearance, and since the concept of digital currency is not enshrined at the level of law, designating it as “other property” in the charge and petition for arrest is acceptable.”
