what is it and where to see it on plastic and virtual cards

Lately, we have been reminded at every turn about fraud with bank cards. Such cases have indeed become frequent. Does this mean that it is dangerous to enter any codes or numbers from the card when paying for online services or purchases? Is it generally acceptable to disclose card details to a bank employee and third parties? Today we will understand what is CVC/CVV on bank cardhow they work and how to keep these passwords secure.

What are CVV/CVC for?

Codes CVC/CVV often used, meaning in fact CVV2 and CVC2, which are located on the map. The fact is that the first type of ciphers is “sewn” into the magnetic tape of the card and is not visually accessible. An ordinary user does not see them and does not use them in any way. Therefore, using the terms CVC and CVV, today we will talk about the second option – CVV2 and CVC2, which the cardholder uses in his daily life.

So, what does CVV mean on the map? This abbreviation stands for Card Verification Code, which means the verification password for plastic carriers of the VISA system. A three-digit cipher is used as an additional security element for:

  • remote payments and purchases on the Internet;
  • transactions using telephone communication through a call center.
  • replenishment of virtual wallets;
  • online translations.

The password is required to verify the authenticity of the plastic card. Unlike the PIN code, CVV/CVC cannot be changed. At the same time, when you make a payment in the application, on the website of an online store or with an online operator, a special “wipe function” will delete the numbers immediately after the operation. So it’s safe to pay online, especially when combined with 3D-Secure.

The code belongs to secret data and is available only to the holder of the “plastic”. Information about it is not included in the chip microchip information.

Payment with CVC2/CVV2

Online payment using CVC2/CVV2 on the website of an online store or organization goes like this:

  • select the desired product or service;
  • click the “add to cart” button or immediately “pay”;
  • indicate the payment option “by bank card”;
  • the system will redirect you to the payment aggregator page, where you will need to enter all the card details, including the CVV code;
  • the program will generate a password that you will receive via SMS – enter it in a special field;
  • click on the “Confirm” button.

After that, the money will be deducted from the bank card account, and the purchase will be completed. If you entered the code (or other card details) incorrectly, the transaction will not be confirmed.

The difference between CVV and CVC and other codes

The difference between CVV and CVC and other codes

Not only VISA cards have such an identification cipher. Card codes of other payment systems are called differently, but technically they do not differ from each other. If you figure out what means on the CVV cardthen the abbreviation translates as “card verification value”.

Cards of different payment systems also have similar passwords:

  • CVC2 is the MasterCard Identification Code.
  • CID is a four-digit combination of American Express (there are practically no such cards in Russia).
  • CVP2 or MirAccept is a security parameter of the Russian Mir system.

Interestingly, some cards do not have verification codes at all (for example, the entry-level “plastic” Maestro). The fact is that these cards are simply not intended for remote purchases.

The DCV code is currently under development. It is planned that the password will be shown to the user through a small display on a plastic carrier. The cipher will be changed after a given period of time, for example, once an hour. So far, the technology is being tested by about 1,000 clients of the 2 largest banks.

Other Card Security Measures

Now we understand what does CVV CVC on the map mean a lot of things. However, this is far from the only measure against illegal actions with cards. There are other levels of protection that every holder should be aware of:

  • Magnetic stripe – has 2 or 3 tracks. In coded form, it contains information about the owner, the expiration date of the “plastic”, etc.
  • Chip – holds more data due to more memory. Information is more secure, since the encryption system is more complicated here.
  • Card number – consists of 16 digits. Includes information such as issuing bank, payment system, etc.
  • PIN-code is a unique secret set of 4 numbers, which is known only to the cardholder. The password acts as an analogue of the client’s signature.
  • Transaction notification system. The holder receives SMS messages about debits and transfers from the card account.
  • 3D Secure is a feature that generates one-time codes when you try to buy something, pay or transfer money.

All of the above methods of protection are rarely used simultaneously on the same card. At the same time, more outdated methods of card protection (magnet stripe, owner’s signature) are gradually being phased out on some cards. At the same time, new features are being introduced that will protect the card from intruders, for example, a photo of the holder on plastic.

Where can I see CVV

Figure out, where on the map CVC CVV on the map not difficult. The code consists of three digits, which are usually located on the back of the plastic carrier. The set of numbers is located at the end of the signature field under the magnetic stripe. Sometimes the code combination is preceded by 4 more digits – this is a duplication of the last numbers of the 16-digit card number. In this case, groups of numbers are separated from each other by a space.

The codes are located on the reverse for a reason. Knowing only the card number, the FI of the holder and the expiration date of the card, in most cases a fraudster will not be able to use this data to steal funds. Therefore, when other people in the store see the front of the card, they are unlikely to take your money. And even if someone sees the secret verification code, but without other information, it will also be useless.

If your card does not have CVV2 (for example, you have a VISA Electron card), then you can request a code from the issuing bank. It is also possible to view the identification code in the online banking application. To do this, go to the “Card details” section and find the necessary information. If this function is not provided, then look for the option “Show CVV2”. In this case, the code will be sent to your phone as a push message or via SMS.

CVC/CVV virtual card codes

Virtual cards do not have a physical medium. Such means of payment are used for transactions on the Internet. At the same time, the card includes all the details necessary for making transactions.

After issuing the card, the user receives CVC or CVV via SMS. In some cases, they send a phone number by which you can get a verification code. As is the case with a standard bank card, you can find the CVV in the online banking application.

Security measures for using a bank card

If you remember what does CVV mean?, then we will return to the fact that this is a method of verification when making payments. That is why the code must be kept secret from unauthorized persons. When using the card, you must observe the following security measures:

  • do not transfer the card to the wrong hands – to the seller, cashier, etc.;
  • do not call anyone and do not give the code over the phone, even if the caller introduced himself as a bank employee;
  • do not enter a password on suspicious one-page sites, unknown online stores, online casinos, etc.;
  • do not send a photo card with all the data;
  • activate the SMS notification service in your bank.

Please note that payment in online stores will be made on a secure page. In this case, you will see a padlock icon next to the site’s address bar. You will then be redirected to your bank page to confirm the transaction. In this way, data encryption is ensured – they are inaccessible to anyone except you.

In what cases it is possible and impossible to call the code

When you pay for purchases or services on the Web, then indicating the code is completely normal. However, it is important to understand what is CVVand that it is only required for payment.

When money should be transferred to you, for example, for the sale of personal items or a service rendered, then your card code is not required! To receive a transfer, the second party will only need a 16-digit card number or your phone number.

Calling CVV is never necessary for anyone. There is no need for other people to know your card code. You need to be more careful with other card details, because some services do not even ask for an identification password. If you need to receive payment from someone, it is preferable to use the phone number associated with the card for this.

What to do if you gave the code to scammers?

What to do if you gave the code to scammers?

What to do if you believed the scammers and called them CVV code cards? Rather, call the hotline of the issuing bank. In such a situation, you do not need to wait for a connection with the operator. Listen to the information and select the “block card” command in tone dialing. Then follow the voice prompts until you block.

Then you need to contact a bank specialist and tell about the situation. If you managed to transfer money from the card, then no later than the next day you should contact the bank branch. Write a statement stating that you do not agree with the operations performed. Further, the security service will conduct an internal investigation of all circumstances.

Often banks go to meet their customers and return the misused funds. However, if it turns out that you yourself compromised the card data and there is no way to return the money, then the decision may be negative. In this case, illegally debited funds should be taken to court.

Conclusion

In 2022, some experts recognize the CVV card protection system as imperfect. If the code is recognized by intruders, for example, using hidden cameras, then the funds can be stolen. That is why it is worth choosing cards with several degrees of protection. In particular, it is better to get a card that supports the 3-D Secure protocol.

Also, cardholders should protect card details from prying eyes, be attentive to services where payment is required. And, of course, do not lose your vigilance, do not tell anyone your PIN or CVV CVCnor one-time SMS passwords.
